catholics for dummies

Church happened. It was a good experience. It has been years or more since I have been to an actual service. I think possibly 5 years since any church and that was a wedding. I was a little nervous when I walked in, as I was unsure of all the church etiquette expected of me. I assumed it would all just flood back to me, and for the most part it did, but a small refresher course prior to entry would not have hurt. I was unsure if the holy water at the entrance was a coming or going thing or if it was required at both, and I totally blew the kneel/bow before pew entry. The rest went well though. I managed to sit beside someone who was defiantly there weekly, and I followed his cues. During the service they had this moment of meditation (defiantly new for me) where we were to just sit quietly and breathe......this was nice, and I would have enjoyed it more if my ADD didn't take over. I heard a little kid in the aisle, so automatically my eyes are open looking around. I sat there in a crowd of people really trying to concentrate and watched her pick her nose. She kept looking up at her mom to make sure her eyes were still closed before she would eat. So nasty - but it kept my focus far more than meditation. I picked up the bulletin for the month, and have noticed that there is a garage sale coming up. It may just be the bake sale I was looking to volunteer at.
Seems early for me to already weasel out of going to church every week, BUT I am already looking for alternatives. I am not sure what me sitting there gives back, except a signature on paper. I have started to watch the paper for community events that could be a good substitute. I think that by volunteering for a few hours on weekends, at charity walks, hospital events, and other such selfless things, I may being doing more good than sitting in a pew. I understand I made a deal, so it would have to be something that would balance out church. We will see where this weaseling take me.

Wow, I can't believe you actually went to church.

I would totally be skipping...make the deal with my fingers crossed...

Hopefully you will be hired by the public board, and you can forget about church.

Kudos to you for going, bible thumper...haha

As I told you last night... I have total church ADD too.

Some advice for when you're looking to get hired - some boards require the priest to write "goes to church regularly" in your letter. Although, a priest who sees you at garage sales, etc. would probably not notice you're not there weekly.

I find church easier to take now that I go a lot... I guess I'm used to it and even if sometimes I don't pay as close attention as I should, it's an hour a week that makes me stop and not run around and maybe just think for awhile...

(although I have skipped the past two weeks due to my social schedule. Shh...)

In the words of Homer J.

"Weasling your way out of things is important to learn, it's what seperates us from the animals - well - except for the weasel."

Good for you to keep your end of the bargin. I find however, that Catholic church can be a little to much every week so I like to venture out to different churchs in the area. I have the same problem as you and Christy and can't pay attention to the whole mass. Either I'm watching the little kids or checking out the building itself.
I do find it's a nice way to relax for an hour and stop running around like a crazy person. (but I haven't been in a while either...don't tell
good luck

I learned from a very early age that its not a good idea to make deals with God. In the end, I always ended up doing things I didn't want to do.

I hear you on the "not knowing what to do in church." I have NEVER been to a sermon or any church service, but when I was in Prague, we thought it would be cool to go to a service in one of those really old, beautiful churches. We did it, and I had absolutely no clue as to what I was doing. :)
